Knot & Twist

Due to racist views, short-sightedness, prejudice and misunderstanding, many kids will be deprived of learning this beautiful, cultural and artistic script, what a pity! I am so thankful my parents did not kick up a fuss when I was taught the lesson in primary school.

Previous paintings...

As you can see, I'm such a versatile artist that I'm beginning to wonder if I have multiple personality 🤣

Homework done! Happy! 🥳🥳🥳

Had to submit these three artworks to qualify for an associate instructor certificate from the Japan Pastel Hope Art Association. Looking forward to the cert!

My art adventure 🌷🌷🌷

This year (2019), I went on several art trips to motivate myself to continue with my creative world, a passion which I've neglected due to my work, which mostly revolves around politics.

Politics was becoming too ugly that I had to look back to move forward.

In November, my world lit up when I signed up for an associate instructors course by the Japan Pastel Hope Art Association. My teacher Viv Ooi (far left in photo above) is an easy going and delightful person who introduced us to the world of Nagomi Art, which uses only fingers, no brushes needed :-) Gratitude to Mei Wan (far right in blue), an awesome friend since Std 1 who joined me in this equally enjoyable journey.

In September, I collaborated with psychologist Dr Valerie Jacques, a long-time friend and former schoolmate, to organise the 'Exploring Self through Art Expression and Mandala at the Penang Maths Platform. The venue was hosted by Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid. Thank you, YB ❤ Another cool YB, Gooi Hsiao Leung from Bukit Tengah, joined us too 🥰

Others art activities which I participated in over the years, especially in the past decade, are listed below:

December 2018:
I exhibited 'The Red-face Goddess' and 'The Two-faced Goddess' in China House, entitled “8”, a group exhibition by an eclectic group of eight women artists curated by beautiful artist Rebecca Wilkinson. These two artwork now live with the ever generous and supportive Dr. Gong in Setiawan, Perak :-)

August, 2018:
In conjunction with the annual George Town Festival, I exhibited my painting ‘A Mandala for Trees’ on the window of Rang 8 Cafe, along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, from Aug 2 till Sept 2, 2018.

Thank you Marina E for this write-up ❤ and then George Town Festival director Joe Sidek for the opportunity.

2016:
My artwork 'Music in the Garden of Eden' was used as album cover for Interweaves the first Malaysian Women's Composers CD, a compilation of songs from six young women composers. Thanks to former colleague CH Loh and inspiring young composer Jessica Cho for making it possible.

2014:
My abstract painting
"Untitled" was displayed as a permanent feature at the Penang Hajj Gallery on Acheh Street. I hope it's still there!

March 2013:
I exhibited three paintings at the Female Art Exhibition, Theme: BLOOMING organised by Cultural & Educational Committee of The Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly (CECKLSCAH).

June 2012:

My painting "Three Owlsome" was exhibited at the first owl museum on Penang Hill.
June 2011:
I auctioned off two paintings to raise funds for the Buddhist society in Kuala Lumpur. My little contribution to my support for interfaith endevours.

May 2011:
I donated/ auctioned off four paintings in aide of
Independent Chinese language online portal Merdeka Review. My four paintings collected a sum of 13,200. Not bad :-)
The same year (2011) in March, and in conjunction with International Women's Day, I exhibited 20 artworoks (above - one sample of works displayed) on the theme of women's empowerment and freedom.
In June 2011, I exhibited my painting 'Young Single Mother' at the Art Exhibition on Motherhood Celebrating and Supporting Women as Mothers, Workers and Nurturers organised by WABA's (World Alliance for Breast Feeding Action). It was their 20th Year Anniversary and the exhibition was part of their fundraising activities in Penang.

In October (2011), I participated "In Death Row Shadows" - an art exhibition on Death Penalty organised by Amnesty International at KLSCAH, in October.

You can also read here for more information about the event.

August, 2008:
It all started when Organic/Electronic BK Ong invited me to exhibit a photo collection entitled ‘Euphoric Victory’ on August 31, 2008 at the Indiependent Art Fest, Penang. At the time, Anwar Ibrahim rejoined politics after serving his first prison sentence. Pakatan Rakyat had seized Penang from BN in GE12, March 8. The photos on display captured the euphoria of the people's victory at the Permatang Pauh by-election.

It was also the year that my dog Bobby came to us 🌷🌷🌷 and I was still in Bangkok, Thailand, serving my time as Communications Officer (later Manager) in Forum-Asia, a human rights NGO.

At the end of 2008, I still managed to exhibit four prints at a fundraising event of the ‘Food Not Bombs’ group in Kuala Lumpur on 27 December.
In 2008, two of my artworks - 'Eye on Human Rights' and 'Six Decades of Turmoil' were used for covers on Asian Human
Rights & Development Newsletter and a book- 60 years anniversary of
Universal Declaration of Human Rights - both published by the Bangkok-based regional NGO, FORUM-ASIA.

Looking forward to more art adventures from 2020 onwards!

ENDS.
